Dr. Sujatha Weerasinghe (Agricultural Research Institute) has invented a method by which banana leaves and other natural leaves can be processed to be used as food wrappers.
The use/manufacture/sale of polythene (less than 20 microns) will be banned from January 1, 2007 and the Ministry intends to use banana leaves as substitutes.
