Sarala Jayani (12) will appear at the Academy Awards ceremony this year, representing the movie Water (Canada's selection for the Academy's Best Foreign Language Film). This is the first time a Sri Lankan will attend the Oscars for a film that was nominated for an award.
"Water" was filmed entirely in Sri Lanka after Hindu fundamentalists protested the making of the movie in India. The original cast (including Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das) was replaced for the Sri Lankan production.
